-When we talk about care for wounds… what are your first thoughts?

-Do you think that wounds or injuries are simple medical conditions that can be treated easily?

Before you know about care for wounds, what is the wound?

Wound is a cut or injury through the skin layers, it is caused after exposure to a trauma.

this trauma can cause two types of wounds:

open wound:

which is characterized by incision or a cut in the skin layers while the internal tissue

is exposed to air and more susceptible to germ and bacterial infection.

closed wound:

which is characterized by contusion under closed skin,

in this condition the injury occurred in the interstitial epidermal layers,

causing the bleeding of the small blood vessels feeding the inner tissue of the skin.

Although the injury or bleeding is under the skin, it is still near to the outer layer to be visible clearly.

Care for wounds in ancient civilizations?

Wounds or injuries, over the years, were the first medical industry that the ancient civilizations dealt with.

The ancient people were perfect in dealing with injuries or wounds,

they not only prescribed the medical herbs and knew its proper dose,

but also were able to use these herbal fibers or leaves as stitching using threads.

They knew how to use the herbs in a sufficient dose to give the therapeutic effect and avoid proceeding to toxic doses,

in addition,

they learned to choose the perfect part of the medicinal plants with its dose of active ingredients

and prescribed the exact formula of the herbal ointment preparations used for different purposes.

In the Ancient Egyptian Papyri,

it was found a complete formula of the herbs used in care for wounds,

they believed in keeping the wounds away from germs and contamination,

as a belief of an ancient theory of infection control over thousands of past years.

How can you deal with care for wounds?

Before you try to treat the wound, you have to classify the type of the contamination of the wound,

as the treatment is according to the level of contamination.

the types of wound according to the level of contamination are:
  • clean wound: which has no visible contamination.
  • contaminated wound: usually has a foreign body or germs around the cut.
  • infected wound: which has discharges or fluids originating from the wound.
  • colonized wound: which is characterized by a pathogenic infection and difficult to heal.

How to apply care for wounds?

The wound or injury is a simple condition which can be healed by itself.

But it’s important to get some steps of care for wounds that can help you to avoid contamination with germs or bacteria,

which can delay the process of healing.

these steps are:

wash and clean the wound:

you can wash your wound with tap water or normal saline, this step can reduce the accumulation of germs or dust around the cut.

remove the bleeding:

in case of scratching or small cuts, the bleeding stops on his own but if not,

you can wash it and apply a sterile bandage on the cut for a while.

just make a gentle pressure on the scratch.

clean the wound:

rinse the wound with alcohol or disinfectant products to remove the excessive debris or dirts,

this step can help in reducing contamination or bacterial infection.

use antibiotics and other greasy ointments:

antibiotic ointment is a greasy substance which acts like a barrier for the wound

and protects it from exposure to the air, at the same time,

it’s an antibacterial agent that can treat the wound if it’s already infected.

cover the wound with a strip or gauze for more protection.

change the dressing or gauze daily:

and repeat it time by time observing the process of healing and monitoring if there is any sign of contamination.

The role of herbs in care for wounds:

During the development of advanced medicine, the pharmaceutical products are more developed than the previous time.

but with the frequent use of antibiotics, the bacteria evolved a resistance for these antibiotics.

It’s not only the bacterial resistance that can delay the healing of wounds,

There are also a new species of bacteria that needs stronger antibiotics to destroy them and protect the cut from bacterial infection.

Therefore, WHO (World Health Organization) issued that the alternative medicine is a complementary medicine,

needed to perform the same treatment with minimum side effects.

We talked before about the care for wounds in Ancient Egypt,

it was clear from the translation of the ancient egyptian papyri,

that the old people in Egypt used honey as a primary treatment in wound healing.

They described everything about honey in their wall writings, talking about the doses and methods of application on wounds.

So, in comparison to recent medicine and the studies of these natural herbs,

it was clearly proved that honey has a good and strong effect in wound healing and bacterial infection.

according to these studies, we can figure out the benefits of honey in care of wounds:

  • has acidic PH: honey has acidic PH that can promote blood to produce oxygen needed for renewal of the tissue.
  • It can reduce proteases which are substances that have a role in impairment of wound healing.
  • has antibacterial effects.

Other medicinal herbs used in care for wound:

  • a specific type of honey called Manuka honey
  • tea tree
  • pineapple
  • flower of Mallow
